親愛的孩子,有人四月十四日听到你在B.B.C[英國廣播公司]遠東華語節目中講話,因是輾轉傳達,內容語焉不詳,但知你提到家庭教育、祖國,以及中國音樂問題。我們的音樂不發達的原因,我想過數十年,不得結論。從表面看,似乎很簡單︰科學不發達是主要因素,沒有記譜的方法也是一個大障礙。可是進一步問問為什麼我們科學不發達呢?就不容易解答了。早在戰國時期,我們就有墨子、公輸般等的科學家和工程師,漢代的張衡不僅是個大文豪,也是了不起的天文歷算的學者。為何後繼無人,一千六百年間,就停滯不前了呢?為何西方從文藝復興以後反而突飛猛晉呢?希臘的早期科學,七世紀前後的阿拉伯科學,不是也經過長期中斷的麼?怎麼他們的中世紀不曾把科學的根苗完全斬斷呢?西方的記譜也只是十世紀以後才開始,而近代的記譜方法更不過是幾百年中發展的,為什麼我們始終不曾在這方面發展?要說中國人頭腦不夠抽象,明代的朱載(《樂律全書》的作者)偏偏把音樂當作算術一般討論,不是抽象得很嗎?為何沒有人以這些抽象的理論付諸實踐呢?西洋的復調音樂也近乎數學,為何法蘭德斯樂派,意大利樂派,以至巴哈亨特爾,都會用創作來作實驗呢?是不是一個民族的藝術天賦並不在各個藝術部門中平均發展的,希臘人的建築、雕塑、詩歌、戲劇,在紀元前五世紀時登峰造極,可是以後二千多年間就默默無聞,毫無建樹了。文藝復興時期的意大利藝術也只是曇花一現。右些民族盡管在文學上到過最高峰,在造型藝術和音樂藝術中便相形見繼,例如英國,有的民族在文學,音樂上有杰出的成就,但是繪畫便趕不上,例如德國。可見無論在同一民族內,一種藝術的盛衰,還是各種不同的藝術在各個不同的民族中的發展,都不容易解釋。我們的書法只有兩晉、六朝、隋、唐是如日中天,以後從來沒有第二個高潮。我們的繪畫藝術也始終沒有超過宋、元。便是音樂,也只有開元、天寶,唐玄宗的時代盛極一時,可是也只限于“一時”。現在有人企圖用社會制度、階級成分,來說明文藝的興亡。可是奴隸制度在世界上許多民族都曾經歷,為什麼獨獨在埃及和古希臘會有那麼燦爛的藝術成就?而同樣的奴隸制度,為何埃及和希臘的藝術精神、風格,如此之不同?如果說統治階級的提倡大有關系,那末英國十八、十九世紀王室的提倡音樂,並不比十五世紀意大利的教皇和諸侯(如梅提契家族)差勁,為何英國自己就產生不了第一流的音樂家呢?再從另一些更具體更小的角度來說,我們的音樂不發達,是否同音樂被戲劇侵佔有關呢?我們所有的音樂材料,幾乎全部在各種不同的戲劇中。所謂純粹的音樂,只有一些沒有譜的琴曲(琴曲譜只記手法,不記音符,故不能稱為真正的樂譜。)其他如笛、簫、二胡、琵琶等等,不是簡單之至,便是外來的東西。被戲劇侵佔而不得獨立的藝術,還有舞蹈。因為我們不像西方人迷信,也不像他們有那麼強的宗教情緒,便是敬神的節目也變了職業性的居多,群眾自動參加的較少。如果說中國民族根本不大喜歡音樂,那又不合乎事實。我小時在鄉,听見舟子,趕水車的,常常哼小調,所謂“山歌”。[古詩中(漢魏)有許多“歌行”,“歌謠”;從白樂天到甦、辛都是高吟低唱的,不僅僅是寫在紙上的作品。] 操逼网 操b 一九六二年九月二十三日 聰,親愛的孩子,很少這麼久不給你寫信的。從七月初起你忽而維也納,忽而南美,行蹤飄忽,恐去信落空。彌拉又說南美各處郵政很不可靠,故雖給了我許多通訊處,也不想寄往那兒。七月二十九用七張風景片寫成的信已于八月九日收到。委內瑞拉的城街,智利的河山,前年曾在外國雜志上見過彩色照相,來信所雲,頗能想像一二。現代國家的發展太畸形了,尤其像南美那些落後的國家。一方面人民生活窮困,一方面物質的設備享用應有盡有。照我們的理想,當然先得消滅不平等,再來逐步提高。無奈現代史實告訴我們,革命比建設容易,消滅少數人所壟斷的享受並不大難,提高多數人的生活卻非三五年八九年所能見效。尤其是精神文明,總是普及易,提高難;而在普及的階段中往往降低原有的水準,連保持過去的高峰都難以辦到。再加老年,中年,青年三代脫節,缺乏接班人,國內外溝通交流幾乎停止,恐怕下一輩連什麼叫標準,前人達到過怎樣的高峰,眼前別人又到了怎樣的高峰,都不大能知道;再要迎頭趕上也就更談不到了。這是前途的隱憂;過去十一二年中所造成的偏差與副作用,最近一年正想竭力扭轉;可是十年種的果,已有積重難返之勢;而中老年知識分子的意氣消沉的情形,尚無改變跡象,當然不是從他們口頭上,而是從實際行動上觀察。人究竟是唯物的,沒有相當的客觀條件,單單指望知識界憑熱情苦干,而且干出成績來,也是不現實的。我所以能堅守陣地,耕種自己的小園子,也有我特殊優越的條件,不能責望于每個人。何況就以我來說,體力精力的衰退,已經給了我很大的限制,老是感到心有余而力不足!啦啦操
